Diary entry for 14 October 1828 (Ne 2F 3, p.72-73) The clergy in the neighbourhood of Maidstone have drawn up& numerously signed a Declaration, exposing the dangers of Popery,the evils arising from it, the necessity of resisting it & of supplantingby their utmost exertions the Established Religion, & [strikethrough: by] of opposingthe spirit of latitudinarianism & liberalism which was leadingus to infidelity & Atheism - I trust that this example willbe followed by the whole body of the English Clergy -
