Ne C 2344 : Letter from Sir Henry Clinton to H.F.C. Pelham-Clinton, 2nd Duke of Newcastle under Lyne; 13 Oct. n.y. [1777]

this I had done, when I received a letter
from the Commander in chief, acquainting
me, "that his victories had been by no means
decisive; & that notwithstanding I may
have gone up the river, (which I told
him I proposed doing) if my object was
not of the greatest importance, with a
probability of fulfilling it in a few days,
I was to give it up & send him full 4000
men", which I am now doing -
- Good God! what a fair prospect
blasted! If Burgoyne has retreated, as
he seemed under no apprehension of dif
ficulties in his retreat, I dread none;
but I wish, if he is gone, to hear that he
is safe over the lakes, having left a
garrison in Ticonderoga.
